Sting, who used to front the 1980s rock n' roll trio The Police, has just announced that he will be performing 10 exclusive shows this fall featuring songs off of his first album in 10 years, The Last Ship. These performances will also be the only times to hear these songs performed live by Sting, and the concert series will be called "An Evening With Sting." Songs off of The Last Ship will also be used in a play that has aspirations for a 2014 Broadway debut.

This new album, which is to be released on September 24, "draws inspiration from the shipbuilding community of Sting's hometown of Wallsend, Newcastle, in the northeast of England, and the demise of that industry during the 1980s," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"The Last Ship is shaping up to be a masterpiece, both an elegy for and a celebration of the working-class life of the Newcastle shipyards," said artistic director of The Public Theater, Oskar Eustis.

"The Public Theater, a New York institution committed to supporting all of the city's distinct communities, was a natural fit to perform this material that is, at its core, about the importance of community," Sting said.

The Last Ship is a concept album that will soon be turned into a play, but Sting wants to perform the songs himself in this special concert series.

Here is an excerpt from Sting's official website, describing the concert series:

"For the first and only time, Sting will perform songs from his new album, The Last Ship, for 10 concerts to benefit The Public Theater in New York City from September 25 - October 9. An evening of music and storytelling in the intimate, 260-seat Anspacher Theater, these performances will offer unique insight into the creative process of both the new album, to be released September 24 (internationally on September 23), and his forthcoming play of the same name, premiering in 2014. All proceeds will benefit The Public Theater."
