Oh My God. I think Macklemore just made me a fan with his freestyle over Wu-Tang Clan's "Triumph." The "Thrift Shop" rapper directly addressed all of his detractors in a freestyle that just needs to be heard, period. Over the course of a few minutes, Macklemore cops to claims of cultural appropriation, "white privelege" based attacks and showcases his own awe at how famous he has become. Also, there's an amazing interview at the beginning where Macklemore explains the R. Kelly bashing in his hit single.
"I never thought R. Kelly would hear that song...he's the GOAT of R&B," he said. "I wrote that line in 2008 when that line was actually relevant. Line's horrible."
Check out the freestyle over Wu-Tang Clan's "Triumph" below:
Highlights:
"I just got DM'ed by Raekwon!"
"What does it say about America that I became a millionaire between kicks and snares and couldn't get into college?"
"I don't walk, I get piggybacks on Action Bronson."
"On behalf of us White rappers, I think it's a fact that yes, we have appropriated culture"
[referring to his own popularity] "Would that have happened if I wouldn't have been a cracker?"
(His stage show seemed like one long gimmick, so the following line went over particularly well with me)
"We live in America, land of gimmicks and ladders, so did I just climb it faster? Of course, race was a factor. But I'm a b-boy, and I'll put a beat in a casket, listen to The Heist, man we almost made a classic."
