Sony has officially announced that Sam Mendes will direct the 24th installment of the James Bond film series, to the relief of just about all Bond fans.
Mendes directed the three previous Bond flicks, all of which starred Daniel Craig in the title role, including "Casino Royale," "Quantum of Solace" and "Skyfall." The trio of films have been among the most popular and critically acclaimed in the series. Mendes had originally been on the fence about whether he would be involved in the fourth Craig-as-Bond film. He had shown interest but hesitated at points, citing other commitments. His official statement announcing his return to the franchise said that Sony made it possible to fit all of his other projects into the shooting schedule for the 2015 film.
"I am very pleased that by giving me the time I need to honour all my theatre commitments", Mendes said. "The producers have made it possible for me to direct Bond 24. I very much look forward to taking up the reins again, and to working with Daniel Craig, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for a second time."
For now, Mendes and Craig's involvement is about all that's known about the next Bond flick. Craig is signed to appear in the next movie as well as a 2017 installment, but Mendes is not confirmed to be involved in the 2017 film. No titles have been released for either film.
Mendes' most recent project has been the theater version of "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory" showing at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London.
