Proving, once again, that Republicans will stay worked up over anything a successful black man does for far longer than is necessary, it appears that House Republicans are looking to make trips to Cuba only available to students. One can't help but feel that this is the result of the Jay-Z and Beyonce's much debated anniversary trip to the country earlier this year.
Floridian Republicans derided the musical power couple and questioned whether they had entered Cuba legally after pictures surfaced of HOV and his favorite lady in Havana. It was eventually revealed that Jigga and Bey had every right to be in the country and had obtained a cultural license to visit the Carribean nation. (The whole affair was remarkably stupid, but we did get some good music out of the deal).
However, House Republicans are looking to turn the egg on their face into an omelette by passing a bill that would block anyone from traveling to Cuba for anything other than academic reasons.
Via SPIN:
Democrats and Republicans both appear to agree the provision relates to the two pop stars. Jay-Z and Beyoncé's visit "was an example of how the guidelines are not being enforced," subcommittee chair Ander Crenshaw, a Florida Republican, told Politico. House Appropriations Committee member Jose Serrano, a New York Democrat, said, "This is the Jay-Z, Beyoncé Bill," and he contended that "it's playing to the audience in Miami." (Tough talk on Cuba is generally seen as a reliable way of attracting voters in south Florida.)
What do you think of the so-called "Jay-Z, Beyonce bill"?
