The George Zimmerman trial has gripped the nation. Ever since that tragic night when Zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, the nation has been hooked on the case. The last few weeks Zimmerman has been on trial for second-degree murder in the shooting of Martin, a young black teen. The trial has grown, with race playing a large part. The trial has had some emotional moments with Judge Debra Nelson openly clashing with defense attorney Don West. However, defense attorney Mark O'Mara and prosecutors Bernie De La and John Guy offered up their closing arguments this week. Six female jurors now have the case in their hands and are considering a second-degree murder charge and a lesser manslaughter charge. The question is, will the verdict come today (Saturday, July 13)?
The closing arguments ended Friday afternoon, with the jury getting the case and having a few hours to decide Zimmerman's fate before the end of the day. Although it would have been an incredibly quick decision, some were expecting the jury to come back with a verdict before the end of the day Friday. That didn't happen, however.
The six-person jury, consisting of all women, wrapped up for the day on Friday without a verdict. CBS News reports that the jurors are set to begin deliberating again Saturday morning at 9am.
One thing to consider is that, as USA Today reports, there are already crowds of people waiting outside the courtroom for the decision. There have been fears of riots occurring if Zimmerman was found not guilty of all the charges. USA Today reports that on Friday afternoon as many as 100 people gathered outside the Seminole County courthouse at one point.
It's anybody's guess as to when the jury will make a decision, but keep checking Mstars for the latest.
