Reports confirm that Cory Monteith was cremated in Vancouver on Tuesday, July 16. Close members of Monteith's family, as well as his "Glee" girlfriend Lea Michele, attended a private viewing at the hospital before the cremation. The late actor's father (Joe) was not informed about the service, and claims that he's completely "devastated." A recent investigation determined that 31-year-old Monteith died of an accidental alcohol and heroin overdose.
TMZ reports that Monteith's body was released to his mother Ann on Tuesday. She held a short viewing at the hospital with Michele and Monteith's brother Shaun. She then decided to cremate the body. Ann's ex-husband (Cory's father) Joe was not invited to the viewing, and he had no idea his son was being cremated. Mr. Monteith recently told TMZ that he's "totally devastated" that he didn't get a chance to say goodbye."I always loved both my sons and am going to miss Cory very very much," he said. "I'm saddened at the fact that I couldn't have been there to see my son before he was cremated."
The British Columbia Coroner Service ultimately determined that Monteith passed away from "a mixed drug toxicity, involving heroin and alcohol." Vancouver police held a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, stating, "The results released by the coroners service support the findings of our investigators and their beliefs upon initial examination that there was no foul play and that this was an overdose and a tragic accident."
Monteith was discovered dead at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel in Vancouver on July 13, 2013. He was just 31-years-old.
Monteith's girlfriend and "Glee" co-star Lea Michelle released this official statement on Wednesday, July 17:
"Lea is deeply grateful for all the love and support she's received from family, friends, and fans," the statement read. "Since Cory's passing, Lea has been grieving alongside his family and making appropriate arrangements with them. They are supporting each other as they endure this profound loss together. We continue to ask the media to respect the privacy of Lea and Cory's family."
Thoughts and condolences go out to Monteith's family, friends, and fans during this time of tragedy.
