When you think of electronic music images of Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, and David Guetta may come to mind, but newcomer Gavin Turek is setting out to change all that. As a classically trained dancer and actress Gavin found her passion in performing arts. After discovering her love of electronic music she began to explore song writing. A MySpace meeting with the international electronic DJ TOKiMONSTA in 2011 would launch her budding career as the sweet sounding techno killer.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, California Gavin Turek was exposed to performing arts at a young age. "Being an LA kid with a mom in the entertainment business, dance and acting classes were kind of part of the experience," Gavin said. "I always loved to sing but dance was my first love." Gavin's versatile foundation as a dancer with experience in jazz, modern, ballet, and even Ghanaian West African dance vicariously paved the way for singing career.
After studying dance in Ghana, while in her junior year at Scrips College Gavin returned to the states confident and ready to explore all of her talents. "Once I got back I hit the ground running, pursuing a career in music," Gavin said," I finally felt I had a way to express both passions simultaneously in my performance."
Gavin began writing and recording music. With the help of her sister Hana, who uploaded Gavin's demo tapes to Myspace, Gavin was discovered in 2010 by the first lady of Brainfeeder, TOKiMONSTA. The following year Gavin appeared on TOKi's Creature Dreams EP. Gavin's love for electronic music and her soulful sound peaked the interest of the international mix-master, paving the way for Gavin's foundation as a new artist.
Gavin's retro pop sound syncs almost effortlessly with nostalgic melodic techno infused beats. Her most recent work TOKiMONSTA's hits "Clean Slate" and "Little Pleasures," clearly illustrates Gavin's potential to become one of most sought out singers in the industry. "I wrote "Clean Slate" when I was living in a hotel actually. I was in a very strange transitional time and those lyrics literally poured out of me once she sent me the track," Gavin said.
She also teamed up with another big name in electronic music, Com Truise. Gavin fell in love with his Cyanide Sisters EP and decided to write and record her own lyrics birthing their collaboration; Gavin Turek v Com Truise a (Re)mix Tape.
Gavin's voice is dreamy and sweet like lazy drive down the coast in a drop top on a sunny day. Her unique sound, and ability to blend in with the electric techno sounds on any track while inadvertently holding her own speaks volumes to her versatility. As she prepares to release her forthcoming EP, The Break-Up Tape, Gavin continues to make a name for herself with the release of her new singles "Let Me Go, and "Suffah" featuring Rye Rye.
