Comic Con 2013 is in full swing in San Diego, so when Matt Smith showed up to a panel that was not the official Doctor Who panel, fans quickly turned it into that because that's how Comic Con works! With the 50th anniversary special coming up on November 23, and Matt's final episode being the Christmas special, there were plenty of questions for the young actor and he did not disappoint.
"I kind of figure it's been four years - the best four years. It's been wonderful," he said. "It's been a privilege to work under Steven Moffat, but, you know, when you gotta go, you gotta go. Trenzalore calls."
At this, the crowd erupts in sighs of disappointment and sadness.
"It's sad. I'm going to miss it," Matt admitted, also saying, "it wasn't an easy choice, you know. It wasn't an easy decision to come to but, I don't know, you can't play it forever."
Then a fan in the audience simply tells him, "Yes you can!"
Matt laughs at this, but continued, "Look, they'll get someone amazing! They'll get someone brilliant to do it."
He explained that moving on is what makes the show so great and that it will get getter and bigger, cheekishly adding, "and you'll forget about me."
The fans all screamed a long "no!" at this statement, which Matt was laughing about.
