Before the American debut of his much-anticipated new album 2013 Blurred Lines, R&B singer Robin Thicke has been unveiling new songs from the album one at a time. Recent days have seen the release of “Ain’t No Hat 4 That,” “Ooo La La” and “Feel Good.” Today’s offering is the throwback to all sorts of old dance and R&B, the monstrous “Get In My Way.”

When the song's snippet debuted early this month, it seemed as though "Get In My Way" was an ode to the R&B boy bands of the '90s, a la BLACKstreet or Boyz II Men. Now that the full song has been unveiled, it's clear that "Get In My Way" is really a love song to all old school forms of rhythm and blues.

With a disco dance beat reminiscent of something straight out of the '70s, Thicke also pulls the glittery Michael Jackson influence here with the funky beats and heartfelt vocals. However, his use of his lower register does call back to BLACKstreet, somehow keeping vibes to the '90s.

As Idolator pointed out in their review, there's also a little something calling back to Celebrity-era *NSYNC. While Thicke frequently draws comparison to *NSYNC breakout star Justin Timberlake in his solo work, "Get In My Way" feels a little like the boy band's final effort.

The mixture of decades in influence perhaps shows the timelessness of a solid dance hit. Thicke brings in the best of the genre to create this loud, booming track.

Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines will be released in the US on July 30. It was released abroad last week, and debuted at No. 1 in the UK.
