Jay Z's magnum opus Magna Carta Holy Grail cannot be stopped. The newly dash-less rapper's twelfth studio album holds the top spot on the Billboard 200 for the second week in a row.
Last week, MCHG debuted with 527,000 copies, despite being given away to 1 million Samsung users for free on July 4. This week, Hova stumbled down to 129,000 copies, but in a sparse music release week, those numbers were enough to keep the top spot for yet another seven days.
Magna Carta Holy Grail, which has received mixed reviews, was a long teased album. Jay Z's revolutionary Samsung team-up included dozens of teaser videos and lyric releases, building up a massive amount of hype for the follow-up to his 2011 collaboration with Kanye West, Watch The Throne.
The album marked the 13th No. 1 album for Jay Z, who now holds the second most chart-topping albums. The Beatles have 19 Nos. 1.
Sara Bareilles' follow up to 2010's Kaleidoscope Heart, The Blessed Unrest, debuted strongly at No. 2, moving 68,000 copies. Though the "Love Song" singer's last album debuted at No. 1, this album, which lacks as big of a single, has still performed relatively well.
Kidz Bop 24, which features the odd reimagining of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" debuted at No. 3 with 62,000 copies. The family and kid-friendly franchise now has 17 top 10 debuts. This year's Kidz Bop 23 debuted at No. 2.
The top 5 albums are rounded out by Ace Hood's Trials & Tribulations at No. 4 (34,000 copies) and Florida Georgia Line's Here's to the Good Times (31,000 copies).
Next week, MCHG may very well fall from the top spot. Selena Gomez's solo debut, Stars Dance was released yesterday (July 23) as well as The Weeknd's Jinx.
