Fans of the classic 1997 PlayStation RPG Final Fantasy VII have long clamored for a remake with updated graphics and full voice acting. A group of fans have taken it upon themselves to make at least part of that dream come true.

A group of devoted fans have started a Kickstarter page in order to create Final Fantasy VII: The Web Series, a live-action miniseries that would bring the original video game to life in a brand new way. The team is seeking $400,000 to create the miniseries.

They have planned at this point for five to six episodes at 15 minutes apiece. Those episodes would make up Season 1 and would portray the start of the game to the famous plate scene in Midgar.

The team consists of several experienced moviemakers, including some who have worked on Harry Potter, Kick-Ass, The Green Lantern, Mortal Kombat and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Xander Williams is writing the script and is best known for his Final Fantasy VII fan-fiction novel, "The Jenova Project," which has been downloaded more than 200,000 times and is held by FFVII fans as one of the greatest fan novels in history.

Square Enix, which created the original game, has squashed fan projects in the past, but the team addressed that concern on the Kickstarter page and revealed that it has been in contact with the company for quite a while:

- We have sent several letters and emails to many departments of SE which we know have been received and read. Square's general legal counsel has been aware of this project for many months.
- We have engaged in persistent dialog with the manager of SE online, who assured us that both the North American and European divisions were supportive of our efforts.
- We have had the series trailer actually appear on the SE website.
- We have acquired the music rights via a surrogate agency that gives us licensing permission with specific legal caveats.

The page also lists two actors for the miniseries: Maggie Cox as Tifa Lockheart and Mars Crain as Barret Wallace.
