While it remains to be seen who will replace Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes in the newly reunited TLC, they did show off one potential candidate at their VH1 Mixtape Festival set on June 27. Lil Mama joined T-Boz and Chilli for a rendition of "No Scrubs" when the group took the stage for the first time in four years.
TLC have tried in the past to replace Left Eye, who died in a car accident in 2002, to no avail. The first new music from the group, a guest appearance on J Cole's "Crooked Smile," was billed as TLC but simply featured T-Boz and Chilli.
Lil Mama wasn't a random choice. The "Lip Gloss" femcee will portray Left Eye in the upcoming VH1 biopic Crazy Sexy Cool: The TLC Story.
The performance also featured a performance of "Waterfalls," which Chilli dedicated to Lopes.
"This song was true and dear to her heart and I'm sure it means a lot to you guys," said Chilli, according to Rap-Up. "If you have a lighter or a cell phone, iPads, computers, whatever you got, light it up. This is dedicated to Lisa, to Left Eye."
Replacement secured or not, TLC will be releasing a greatest hits album on October 15 full of reworked versions of their classics as well as four new songs, with guest appearances by superstars like Lady Gaga.
