"American Idol" season six winner Jordin Sparks has largely been laying low for the past few years. Though the "Battlefield" singer has been busying acting in "Sparkle," opening for acts like Backstreet Boys and releasing a fragrance, she's largely been inactive in the music scene.
Now, Sparks is back with a smooth yet upbeat R&B tune "Skipping A Beat." With a flowery, upbeat backbeat full of finger snaps and a deep piano, the music keeps it light but still maintains a harder R&B, urban feel.
Meanwhile, Sparks keeps the vocals simultaneously happy-go-lucky, loving and full of attitude. She ranges from a soft, small whisper to powerful croons and runs to edgy growls. It's been four years since the release of her massive single "Battlefield" and six years since she won "American Idol," but Sparks still proves she has the range and ability to sing any kind of pop or R&B.
While the musical styles do lean more toward the strictly urban side of Sparks -- it's very easy to imagine "Skipping A Beat" becoming a radio staple -- the lyrics are as loving as a One Direction single.
Likely inspired by her boyfriend Jason Derulo, Sparks is crazy in love on "Skipping A Beat." The opening verse lines of, "You make my heart skip like we're playing hopscotch, / Hope I'm the one that you wanna put the rock on, / Hey, hey, I make you stutter, / Hey, hey, I think I love ya," set the course for the track.
Sparks likens her love to being hyperactive, having OCD and making one's heart go all aflutter and, well, skip a beat.
Though Sparks was rumored to supposed to have sung Ariana Grande's "The Way," "Skipping A Beat" is a perfectly suitable comeback song. Strong, varied vocals prove Sparks still has all the talent in the world, and a smooth, urban instrumental has the makings of a crossover hit.
