We all understand what The Polyphonic Spree is and what the band stands for: a large musical collective that spreads a belief in positivity and love with upbeat songs and sincere lyrics. Melodies are simple. Harmonies and orchestrations are layered. With "Yes, It's True," The Polyphonic Spree have not lost a step and are, in fact, helping listeners keep stride with the notion of happiness in music.
Eccentric frontman Tim DeLaughter leads his orchestra of talented musicians and vocalists just as he has in the past, but his message has grown. The positivity has worked for the Spree and that all they can do now is continue to share the love.
Fans of The Polyphonic Spree will not be disappointed with "Yes, It's True" in any way. Each song could easily become the band's next "Light and Day," but with saying that I do not want to take away from tracks like "Hold Yourself Up," "Raise Your Head," "Heart Talk" or "Carefully Try." These new tracks are a great example of a band evolving as an entity or a movement despite an ever-changing roster of members.
"You're Golden" is easily the stand out track for me. It's a simple love song in the barest sense of the word. Tim DeLaughter's lyrics range from simple to bizarrely modern when he sings this song to his beloved. Listing the mundane things that aren't reasons for his love, he includes the line "It's not your Facebook likes/ It's not your Instagram pride," bringing listeners back to a world occupied solely by the smartphone in their respective hands. But it still allows us to connect to the song, despite the strange choice of words one would not expect to hear in a pop tune.
The Polyphonic Spree does not have much of a draw in terms of new listeners unfortunately (I really hope I'm wrong in saying this, but it certainly comes off that way). Most people know them for that one song they heard in a bunch of car commercials ten years ago. But that should change with "Yes, It's True." This album should go down as one of the year's best.
