The Tampa Bay Rays executed a successful hidden ball trick against the Los Angeles Dodgers Saturday during a 5-1 Dodgers victory. It's usually only seen in the movies, but Rays third baseman Evan Longoria tagged out the Dodgers' Juan Uribe at third base in the fourth inning this past weekend. Uribe was caught talking with third base coach Tim Wallach when he was tagged out. It's rare fans ever get to see the hidden ball trick even attempted, let alone pulled off successfully. You can watch the video below.
The play was pulled off after A.J. Ellis of the Dodgers hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly with all three runners moving up. The ball came in to first baseman James Loney who was standing behind the pitcher's mound. Loney then tossed the ball to shortstop Yunel Escobar who quickly tossed the ball to Longoria who was standing behind third base. This entire time, Uribe had his head down as he was standing on the third base bag. It looked like Uribe was checking his cleats or adjusting his pants, something you will see players do commonly while standing on the bag in between plays.
Longoria then stood with the ball behind Uribe who was unaware of where the ball was. Uribe picked his foot off the bag ever so slightly and the umpire was watching the play closely and called Uribe out.
"It's a play that I always have in the back of my mind through the course of a game," Rays shortstop Escobar explained. "Guys were going everywhere, so it happened to be a good situation where I thought we might be able to tag Uribe out. The umpire was standing there and knew what was going on right away, and the only one that didn't know what was going on was Uribe."
Longoria explained that Loney's toss to Escobar was what made the play successful. "I was just kind of waving my hand to see if Loney would see me, and he did," Longoria explained. "But he threw the ball to Yuni - which was the best part of the play, because it was indirect. Once I got the ball, I just kind of waited there. He barely took his foot off the base and I tagged him. It really was the one highlight of the day for us."
