Lady Gaga's new "Artpop" single "Applause" leaked onto the Internet on Saturday, Aug. 10. The premature release prompted the Mother Monster to give the song an immediate, emergency release, according to her Twitter.
"A POP MUSIC EMERGENCY IS UNDERWAY 911," Gaga wrote on her newly bare bones Twitter account at 11:39 a.m. today (Aug. 12). "911 SUMMON THE MONSTER TROUPES... DUE TO HACKERS AN ABUNDANCE OF LOW/HIGH QUALITY LEAKS...WE ISSUE THIS POP MUSIC EMERGENCY...MONSTERS SPREAD THE WORD. MY NEW SINGLE 'APPLAUSE' IS OUT TODAY AND CAN BE HEARD ON UNITED STATES RADIO IN 15 MINUTES. INTERNATIONAL RADIO TO FOLLOW."
"Applause" was originally due out Aug. 19.
The track is more reminiscent of much of today's EDM-induced pop music. Though many speculated that the pop superstar was going to go avant-garde on "Artpop," the leaked single implies that she may go back to her pop roots, albeit with freaky, David Bowie-esque vocals. At the very least, her third studio album may be a mixed bag.
"Applause" originally leaked over the weekend, prompting Gaga to ask the heavens "why" on her Twitter account.
Though her Little Monsters were vigilant in keeping the leaks at bay and reporting unofficial releases to her record label, Universal, the fan army could not contain the music.
Lady Gaga isn't the only pop artist to have her new, big single leak prematurely. Katy Perry's first "Prism" single "Roar" hit the Internet two days early on Saturday, as well. And earlier this summer, One Direction's hotly anticipated "Best Song Ever" was leaked several days before its due date.
Instead of shying away from the leaks, each artist chose to rush release their song to radio.
Additionally, "Burqa" or "Aura" from "Artpop" also leaked earlier this month.
