This weekend’s Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in San Francisco may have come to an end but everyone is still buzzing about the performances. Legendary musician Paul McCartney is of course one of the most talked about performers from the festival. The Beatles’ member showed his fans that he can still keep up with today’s acts at 71 years old and pleased all with a few classics. In one of the most talked about performances from the weekend, McCartney invited the Kronos Quartet on stage for a special rendition of “Yesterday.”
Sir Paul performed many crowd-pleasers including “Hey Jude,” “The Long and Winding Road,” “Blackbird,” “Let It Be” and “Paperback Writer” and a number of Wings tracks. He also played several newer songs including the love song “My Valentine,” which was written for his wife Nancy Shevell. It was the song “Live and Let Die” that really brought the crowd to life after a number of laidback tunes.
Check out McCartney and the Kronos Quartet performing “Yesterday” followed by some more fan-filmed footage from his Outside Lands Festival set (which was around 2 hours and 45 minutes long):
Paul and his band are currently on his "Out There" tour and he recently reflected on the experience. Here is an excerpt from an Mstars article that covered this:
"It's really fun," McCartney says of touring. "We've got a really good band. We're very happy with the show, 'cause we've honed it down over the years as to what we like playing and what we think the audience likes to hear. There's some stuff the audience doesn't even know - not many, I must admit, but a few little ones. So the show just seems to run itself now. I'm constantly amazed at it, actually. I get on there, do the opening things, and then suddenly I'm changing to electric guitar and I'm going, 'Oh, this is nice' - you know, I always like to plug in an electric guitar. Then I'm swapping guitars for 'Paperback Writer,' and I'm thinking, 'This is nice. I love this Epiphone Casino.' Then, just when it could get boring, I move to piano, and I think, 'Oh, this is cool!' I swap through instruments quite a lot, which keeps it nice and fresh for me."
McCartney says that fans shouldn't worry when this tour ends, because he has no plans to retire yet.
"I can't imagine ever not doing it," he said. "It's what I do, and it's what I've always done, and I love it so much. Of course, there's got to be some kind of physical limitation. But I haven't found it. I mean, I did that show last night, and I'm thinking, 'Jesus, God, man. You know, you're not 25.' But then, my other side of my head's going, 'Yes, you are! Get on with it!' So I haven't found my physical limitation yet. If I do, then I'll have a think about the question. 'Til then, I'm ignoring it."
