ESPN fired analyst and former football player Hugh Douglas on Tuesday two weeks after he reportedly called fellow ESPN personality Michael Smith an "Uncle Tom."
Deadspin reported last Tuesday that an incident occurred between Douglas and Smith at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention and Career Fair. Douglas was reportedly very drunk as Smith and Jemele Hill, another ESPN personality, spoke to hundreds at the convention.
Smith and Hill are both former print journalists and have been friends for a long time. They do a podcast together called His & Hers with Michael Smith and Jemele Hill, and Hill recently joined Smith's television show "Numbers Never Lie," on which Douglas often appears. Douglas supposedly has been uncomfortable since Hill's addition to the show and he felt left out.
As Hill was finishing her speech to the crowd, a drunk Douglas reportedly tried to get the microphone from her, and she had to make a considerable effort to stop him from taking it.
The next night at a club, Douglas was reportedly drunk again and called Smith an "Uncle Tom." He also grabbed Smith by the arm and threatened to beat him up before security broke them up.
On Tuesday, SI.com's Richard Deitsch reported that ESPN had fired Douglas.
"He no longer works for us effective today," an ESPN spokesperson said.
Douglas posted the following on Twitter:
"I am very disappointed to be leaving ESPN and will have more to say about this situation and my future at the appropriate time."
