Amidst rumors of a break up with hey boyfriend Jai Brooks, "The Way" singer Ariana Grande keeps on working. After weeks of teasing news about a new single and music video, today (Aug. 19), Grande released "Almost Is Never Enough" featuring The Wanted member Nathan Sykes.
The short, smooth R&B ballad features a simple piano instrumentation with finger snap accompaniments. In her signature Mariah Carey-esque vocals, Grande breathily sings about a relationship that fell apart before the two involved could truly fall in love, but "almost is never enough."
Sykes comes in during the second verse, sharing Grande's laments about a relationship that could never fully develop. "Try to deny it as much as you want / But in time, I feel it will show / 'Cause sooner or later, we'll wonder why we gave up / But everyone knows / That almost is never enough," the two croon in the pre-chorus, seamlessly trading off power vocals.
The music video itself is simple enough. Grade and Sykes record their single in the studio, belting out their notes behind microphones and sitting together on a piano bench. Clips of the duo relaxing and playing pool are also shown, giving the video an intimate and fun vibe, despite the song's heartbreaking lyrics.
Clips from the upcoming teen drama "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" are interspersed between scenes of Grande and Sykes. In addition to being featured on Grande's upcoming debut album "Yours Truly," "Almost is Never Enough" will also appear in that movie's soundtrack.
Demi Lovato's "Heart by Heart" will also be featured on "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" soundtrack, which drops tomorrow (Aug. 20).
Meanwhile, "Yours Truly" will be released on Aug. 30.
