It was bound to happen eventually. Grand Theft Auto has become such a cultural force in its own right (especially its stellar soundtracks) that rappers love to get on them. It was just a matter of time before someone wrote a song about the game to be featured in said game. Such is the case with A$AP Rocky's "Untitled," the latest cut to be released from the GTAV soundtrack.
Rocky cleverly couches his gangbanging lines in a sort of doublespeak. On the one hand, this could be a straight up crime spree rap. On the other it serves as a recent history of the video game franchise.
Some examples:
Niggas pistol popping like it's 1999
I was 9 maybe 10, then again never mind
What's significant about 1999? Grand Theft Auto 2.
After that, A$AP offers a run-down of the games activities before making a direct reference to GTA4 and San Andreas.
Car jacking, pistol packing, mothafuckin' choppers clapping
Metal jacket automatic magazines head on traffic
Window smashing, windows crashing, pants sagging, fuck your fashion
Yeah a nigga run Manhattan, back in Cali's where it happen
Finally, A$AP ends on a series of lines that leave no doubt of his "rap song for a game, about a game" intentions:
Hit departments, cool it all, must set my goal if you accomplish
Shoot a target cause you the target, moving targets, new accomplish
Kill the game but still regardless, beat the charges, do the honors
What do you think of Rocky's latest "Untitled"? Is it better than "Garbage"?
