The Electric Zoo 2013 music festival taking place at Randalls Island in New York City on Labor Day weekend has been cancelled. The music festival was shut down just hours before the third day of performances on Sunday, September 1st. The decision comes after two people died over the first two days. The decision is said to be a mutual decision between the New York City's Mayor's Office and festival organizers after the two deaths were rumored to be in relation to drug use.

"The Electric Zoo organizers have worked with city officials to reduce health risks at this event, but in view of these occurrences, the safest course is to cancel the remaining day of the event," the Mayor's Office said in a statement via the New York Times. The two festival goers who died were 24 and 20-years old.

According to the Huffington Post the statement from the Mayor's Office also reads:

"During the first two days of the Electric Zoo music festival, two concert-goers have died and at least four others became critically ill and have been placed in intensive care at area hospitals. Definitive causes of death have not yet been determined, however, both appear to have involved the drug MDMA (ecstasy, or molly)."

Electric Zoo's official event website posted the following statement:

"The founders of Electric Zoo send our deepest condolences to the families of the two people who passed away this weekend. Because there is nothing more important to us than our patrons, we have decided in consultation with the New York City Parks Department that there will be no show today."

Pop Crush reports that this year's Electric Zoo festival drew nearly 100,000 fans. Among the big name artists who performed or were scheduled to perform were David Guetta, Avicii, and Krewella.
