PBS's "Downton Abbey" received 12 Emmy nominations this year, including acting nods for Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter and Maggie Smith. The series is also nominated for Outstanding Drama Series. Though those are reasons to be excited for the series, its fourth season returns on January 5, 2014, and we should all be excited about the first teaser trailer for the upcoming episodes. Check it out right here!

"You have a straightforward choice," Violet Crawley (Maggie Smith) says to open this dramatic sneak peak at the 2014 season. "You must choose either death or life."

What we can tell from this first look is that Elizabeth (Michelle Dockery) will most likely choose life despite her devastating loss in the last season.

In fact, this trailer makes it look like all of the characters are choosing life as well as kissing, embracing and crying. Classic "Downton," am I right?

All joking aside, this first trailer is definitely a great way to get fans excited for the upcoming season. Check it out right here:

In recent casting news for the hit show, American actor Paul Giamatti had been cast "against type" to play a playboy in 2014's season.

"We're excited that Paul Giamatti will be joining us on 'Downton' to play Cora's brother Harold, the rather free-spirited uncle to Mary and Edith," said Gareth Neame, managing director of Carnival Films (a co-producer of the "Downton Abbey").

Neame also gave fans a little hint as to how Giamatti's character would cause some trouble for the main characters.

"We can't wait to see him work alongside Shirley MacLaine, who are both sure to upset the Grantham's apple cart in this year's finale," he teased.

Giamatti joins a slew of new cast members including Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Tom Cullen, Julian Ovenden, Nigel Harman, Joanna David and Gary Carr.

Season four of "Downton Abbey" will kick-off on January 5, 2014 (in the United State).
