The Beatles' classic Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band is finally going platinum, 46 years after being released.
That's not to say the mega-hit album didn't sell enough to go platinum in Britain (300,000 copies) before today. The rules of the British Phonographic Industry used to award platinum status only to albums that requested it. A recent rule change says that all albums who reach the threshold will be awarded platinum status, regardless of request.
Therefore, albums by the likes of Bob Dylan and Marvin Gaye will also recieve late certification, that they've been due for quite a while. There is a catch, though.
Via The Guardian:
These new awards are only being given out based on receipts since 1994. A record like Sgt Pepper's, which has sold roughly 5.1m UK copies overall, will not receive its proper designation of 17x platinum: instead, the LP is officially triple-platinum, based on 900,000 copies moved since 1994.
