Rock has overtaken the Billboard 200, as Avenged Sevenfold's latest album, "Hail to the King" debuted at the No. 1 spot on the album-sales tracking chart. Led by the hard-hitting hard rock single of the same name, "Hail to the King" sold 159,000 copies in its first week, according to Billboard, and that was enough to knock Luke Bryan's "Crash My Party" from the top spot after that record reigned supreme for two weeks.
That doesn't mean that Bryan has a poor sales week by any means. "Crash My Party" slipped down one spot to No. 2, moving 92,000 units. Bryan has had one of the most successful album sales of the year so far, totaling 774,000 copies in the US thus far.
Rap artists Big Sean and Juicy J take the next two spots on the Billboard 200, creating an eclectic mix of top albums. Big Sean's fourth studio album "Hall of Fame" takes No. 3, selling 72,000 copies. Meanwhile, Juicy J's "Stay Trippy" debuted with 64,000 records sold.
Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" is the album that simply cannot stop. Though not quite as successful as his 12-week Hot 100 peaking single of the same name, "Blurred Lines" is back in the top five this week at No. 5, selling 55,000 copies. That's a rise of 20 percent, and Thicke was likely aided by his VMA performance featuring Miley Cyrus, 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar.
The No. 6 album also goes to a VMA performer, Justin Timberlake. His "The 20/20 Experience" record shot back up to the top 10 from No. 22. He sold 37,000 records this week. Timberlake received the Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs and performed a 15-minute long medley of his biggest hits, which included a reunion with his boy band 'NSYNC.
Similarly, Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox" jumped up from No. 18 to No. 9, after performing "Gorilla" at the VMAs and winning Best Male Video. "Unorthodox Jukebox" sold 27,000 records last week.
John Mayer's latest effort "Paradise Valley" stumbled down five spots, slipping from its No. 2 debut to No. 7. Mayer's record, which features girlfriend Katy Perry and Frank Ocean, sold 36,000 copies.
Squeezing in between Mayer and Mars is a tribute album to country rock band Alabama, "Alabama & Friends," which moved 32,000 copies.
TGT's "Three Kings" fills out the top 10, selling 27,000 copies.
Next week, VMA fever will have finally died down, settling album sales numbers. Ariana Grande's debut album "Yours Truly" is projected to reach No. 1.
