Coldplay first announced that they would contribute an original song "Atlas" for "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" soundtrack in August. After a month of anticipation, the new song from the "Paradise" band has finally been released. A lyric video for "Atlas" debuted on YouTube today (Sept. 6).
Fitting for the journey-driven "Catching Fire," which follows Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) through their victory tour across Panem and then into the Hunger Games Quarter Quell, "Atlas" is about finding inner strength and fighting your demons, lyrically.
"Carry your world / I'll carry your world," lead singer Chris Martin croons in the song's emotional chorus.
Musically, "Atlas" reflects the simplicity of older Coldplay material. Though epic in its own way, "Atlas" lacks the bombastic levels of recent singles "Viva La Vida" or "Every Teardrop is A Waterfall." Instead, the piano instrumentation and Martin's vocals are allowed to shine, bringing back memories of "Parachutes" and "A Rush Of Blood to the Head" era Coldplay.
Listen to "Atlas" from "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" below.
"Atlas" is by no means the first Coldplay song to appear on a soundtrack -- the Brits are notably featured in movies such as "Garden State," "The Last Kiss" and "The Amazing Spider-Man." However, it is the group's first original song for a feature film.
"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" will hit theatres on Nov. 22. There are no other artists announced for the film's soundtrack. The accompanying disc for the first "Hunger Games" movie featured Taylor Swift, The Civil Wars, Arcade Fire and more.
