The X Factor continued to demonstrate the law of diminishing returns earlier this week when its season premeire with new judges Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio dropped off by over a third in the ratings (36%). The Simon Cowell-helmed singing competition managed a 2.1 rating among the 18-49 demo and 6.2 million viewers overall.
The drop came in spite of weaker competition than last year's premiere on the airwaves. Last year's X Factor kickoff had to go head-to-head with fellow singing show The Voice. However, that lack of another option didn't help X Factor any, it was still handily beaten by Big Brother on CBS.
This will no doubt cause execs at FOX to take a big step back, look at the state of things and realize maybe two Simon Cowell-produced singing reality shows is two many for one network, maybe people are tired of the genre as a whole and the time has come to move on...
Who am I kidding? They'll just throw new judges at the show every year until the studio it's made in literally rots.
