Emmys 2013 Live Blog: Relive the Night's Biggest Moments, Including Winners, Neil Patrick Harris SInging, Photobombs and More

The 65th Annual Primetime Emmys air at 8 p.m. tonight on CBS, after months of anticipation. "How I Met Your Mother" actor Neil Patrick Harris, who returns to the broadcast for the second time, will host television's biggest night. Featuring presenters like Jimmy Fallon, Alec Baldwin and Matt Damon, the Emmys are sure to be a fun-filled night, and like any awards show, some surprises are certainly in store.

7:58 p.m.: Howdy, y'all! Carolyn Menyes, MStars News reporter checking in here. The 65th Annual Primetime Emmys will start soon, following the end of the Jets-Bills game. Football just wrapped up, and the Jets won 27-20. Wonder what the demographic crossover for football fans and Emmy viewers is...

8:04: Emmys kicking off four minutes late because of the NFL game. Host Neil Patrick Harris starting with a skit about binge-watching all of 2012/2013's television. He even threw some shade at the prestige of TV versus movies. Daaang, NPH!

8:06: Watching this montage of dramas, comedies and reality shows is making me think about my favorite TV moment of the year. Tied between the "30 Rock" series finale and the "Mad Men" shocker when Don Draper (Jon Hamm) and Betty (January Jones) had an affair with each other! That had me talking for days.

8:08: Opening skit was very cleverly edited! I liked.

8:10: Harris joking around about technology, with all the wonderful charisma that he's known for. Not the most original joke material, but it works.

8:12: Last year's host Jimmy Kimmel takes the stage as well as former host Jane Lynch. "I wasn't asked back because I'm a woman," said Lynch. "No one watching that night thought you were a woman," Harris fired back. Now, here's Jimmy Fallon. We're just throwing everyone up there! Star power!

8:14: Conan O'Brien takes to the stage. Be still, my heart. Now, Kevin Spacey is talking about his devious plot to take the Emmys down. 

8:15: "Take off your pants and twerk it," Tina Fey and Amy Poehler shout from the audience. Why don't those queens just host everything? They're in talks to host the Golden Globes next year!

8:16: Now, Fey and Poehler are introducing Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The show's running over, so their hilarity is being cut short. There are seven women nominated in this category.

8:18: First award goes to... Merritt Wever for her role in "Nurse Jackie." This is the third win for the Showtime series. "Thank you, thank you so much. I have to go now. Bye," she said in a bizarre, short speech. I hope she's okay. That was an odd moment...

8:23: Harris, yet again, jokes about DVRs and TV technology. Is the industry worried about all the new ways viewers can consume TV? I wonder.

8:24: LL Cool J and some blonde woman (I'm awful), but Tina Fey and Tracey Wigfield have won the Best Comedy Writing award for "30 Rock." The NBC show's last hoorah aired this winter. "I never said you could talk, Tracey," Fey joked after her partner's speech. Yay for the ladies, amirite?

8:26: Probably due to football, the show is absolutely just moving along. Zooey and Emily Deschanel are introducing Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. They joke about all the men on "Modern Family" who are nominated. The Emmys <3 "Modern Family," the show has won 12 awards before tonight. But, Tony Hale from "Veep" wins! Score one for Buster Bluth!

8:29: Robin Williams is honoring Jonathan Winters, a comedian. "Thanks for the spark, big guy," he touchingly said after doing a variety of impressions and spoke about how Winters influenced his comedy. Winters passed away in April and is best known for his role as Papa Smurf and for gigs on "Mork & Mindy," "Life with Bonnie" and "Hee Haw."

8:37: Handsome older gentlemen Alec Baldwin and Jon Hamm are here to introduce Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Mmm... dat beard on Hamm.

8:38: Julia Louis-Dreyfus wins the Emmy for her role as Selina Meyer on "Veep." Tony Hale, I am loving the photo bomb. It's delightfully creepy and hilarious. He reminds her to thank her family and that she "loves them so much."

8:40: Margo Martindale and Will Arnett are here to acknowledge winners that were previously announced, all while plugging their new CBS series "The Millers." Melissa Leo and Bob Newhart won. Leo introduces an Emmy for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series.

8:42: The Emmy goes to... "Modern Family." Second time a woman has won for comedy directing. Get it, girl! (But not "Girls," Lena Dunham lost this year.)

8:45: Boob joke about Sofia Vergara. HILARIOUS. -_- Jimmy Kimmel and Vergara introduce Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy, after talking about how laughter is actually a horrible medicine. Many talented men in this category. Personally, I'm a huge fan of all these actors, so any win is a win. 

8:47: The Emmy goes to... Jim Parsons for "The Big Bang Theory." Okay, he was actually the one man I didn't want to win. C'mon! "30 Rock!" "Arrested Development!" This is the third win for Parsons for his role as Sheldon Cooper.

8:48: Rob Reiner here to pay tribute to Edith Bunker actress Jean Stapleton. The two worked together on the groundbreaking television sitcom "All in the Family." Reiner tears up as he thinks of her death back in May, recalling when Archie Bunker said goodbye to Edith. "You have no right leaving me that way without giving me one last chance to say 'I love you,'" Reiner quotes from "All in the Family." Cue my own tears. I'm off to tell people how much I love them. Excuse me a moment...

8:55: Michael Douglas and Matt Damon from the made-for-TV film "Behind the Candleabra," about Liberace. Sir Elton John is at the Emmys to pay tribute to the legendary piano player, who was clearly an influence on John, both in his personal life and musically -- both musicians are gay and have had to hide that fact. John is playing a new song inspired by Liberace, called "Home Again."

9:01: As John sings "Home Again," the penultimate episode of "Breaking Bad" begins on AMC. Wonder how many hardcore television fans are switching channels right now... (Probably a lot.)

9:03: Award for Lead Actress in a Movie or Mini-Series. The Emmy goes to... Laura Linney for "The Big C: Hereafter."

9:09: So... we're a little over an hour into the 65th Annual Primetime Emmys. Best moment so far? Probably Tony Hale's photobomb.

9:11: The cast of "How I Met Your Mother" are poking fun at castmate Neil Patrick Harris' constant hosting gigs. Like the common "HIMYM" trope, they hold an intervention for Harris. This is lovely.

9:13: Emmy nominees for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. "Breaking Bad" nominated twice, "Downtown Abbey," "Game of Thrones" and "Homeland" also nommed. Emmy goes to "Homeland" writer Henry Bromell. His wife accepted the award on his behalf. Bromell passed away earlier this year. :(

9:15: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Anna Gunn wins for her much-hated "Breaking Bad" character Skyler White. IMO, Skyler is incredibly misunderstood. Of course, Walter is the worst husband ever. Git it, gurrrl.

9:17: Jane Lynch pays tribute to Cory Monteith, her "Glee" costar who passed away earlier this year at the age of 31. "Cory was a beautiful soul. He was not perfect, which many people here can relate to," she said, while lamenting the disease of addiction.

9:24: Halfway through the show, according to NPH. Time for a song and dance number. Woo! About damn time. Song about being in the middle of the show, which is kind of fun.

9:29: Fun fact: Mindy Kaling is my spirit animal. She's here with handsome man to introduce Best Reality Show Competition. Other fun fact this is relevant: This is the first time "American Idol" has not been nominated in this category. Winning instead... "Idol" competitor "The Voice." My oh my, how the turntables...

9:36: Kerry Washington, can I have your dress? Now, time for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Winner is Bobby Cannavale. He's actually in awe, which is not surprising. It was a big category! Also: do we know why they announce what people did as children when they win? It's weird.

9:40: Big time... Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama. Hugh Bonneville, Bryan Cranston, Jeff Daniels, Jon Hamm, Damian Lewis and Kevin Spacey. Big names! Jeff Daniels wins for his role in "The Newsroom." First nomination and win for the veteran actor. Start it off with an "Oh, crap!" My kind of guy.

9:43: Don Cheadle here to pay tribute to 1963, when more people began to get their news on TV. News of John F. Kennedy's death and the March on Washington highlighted 1963. Of course, that was a huge historical year for America and for television, but why are we doing this? It's kind of odd.

9:46: Carrie Underwood paying tribute to 1963 with the Beatles' "Yesterday," which was released in 1965, of course.

9:55: "Late Night" host Jimmy Fallon chases his microphone while teasing Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Claire Danes wins for "Homeland." Nice to see Angela Chase doing well!

9:59: Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series goes to David Fincher for the Netflix show "House of Cards."

10:00: One hour to go! Jim Parsons and Bob Newhart from "The Big Bang Theory." Outstanding Writing for a  Variety Series. "The Daily Show" has won for nearly 10 years straight. Will someone else finally nab the trophy from the political satire??

10:02: Holy crap, that Jon Stewart Muppet. And Jimmy Kimmel got Oprah? Damn, yo!

10:04: WOAH! "The Colbert Report" steals it from "The Daily Show." Can't wait to hear Stephen Colbert talk about this. "Wow. The Emmys are so good this year. Something special about it, I don't know what." Colbert thanks "The Daily Show" (where he got his start).

10:06: Directing in a Variety Series. Emmy goes to... Don Roy King for the Justin Timberlake episode of "Saturday Night Live."

10:09: Michael J Fox paying tribute to "Family Ties" crew member Gary Goldberg.

10:14: First time Outstanding Choreography will be included in primetime telecast. This will also be the first full-out dance number at the Emmys. Not surprising, considring Neil Patrick Harris' love of dance and music.

10:17: No lie. I was kind of dreading this, but the TV-inspired dancing is actually pretty amazing. This might be the most interesting part of the show so far.

10:19: Oh, and look at how happy the nominees are. I could not be any more in love with this moment. Is "So You Think You Can Dance?" nominated? Derek Hough wins, however, for "Dancing with the Stars."

10:21: NPH's "How I Met Your Mother" co-stars Allison Hannigan and Colbie Smulders introduce Outstanding Variety Series. I goofed earlier... this is the award for the show itself and the one for which "The Daily Show" has had a long run. But! Colbert still clinches it.

10:24: James Ganfolfini tribute from Edie Falco, his "Sopranos" co-star and close friend.

10:32: Commercial breaks getting longer, my patience wearing thin. Three hours is a wee bit long, non? Outstanding Writing for Mini-Series, Movie, or Special introduced by Allison Janney and Anna Faris from "Mom," which is hopefully better than "Dads." Abi Morgan wins for "The Hour." She's British and adorable.

10:34: Outstanding Supporting Actor. Yay? James Cromwell wins for his insane role as Dr. Arden on "American Horror Story: Asylum." Oh my god. He was creepy on that show. Like, beyond creepy.

10:47: It's important to keep people waiting for Outstanding Director for a Miniseries or Movie. Steven Soderbergh wins for "Behind the Candleabra." Now, Outstanding Supporting Actress... Ellen Bernstein for "Political Animals." I'll never think of her as anything besides Ma in "Requiem For A Dream." "You on uppas, ma?"

10:55: The Emmys will never end. :( Claire Danes and Bryan Cranston giving award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie. Emmy goes to... Michael Douglas for "Behind the Candleabra" for his role as Liberace.

10:59: Outstanding Miniseries or Movie winner! Oh man! Winner is............... "Behind the Candleabra." Here's my surprise face. -_-

11:04: Will Ferrell, looking handsome in gym shorts and a T-shirt. I hope those are actually his children. Anyway, I love his T-shirt. Eagles and trucks. Hell yeah!

11:06: Least surprising thing ever. "Modern Family" wins. Just one of 12 nominations this year. Jeez Louise! "None of us grew up feeling like winners." Pretty sure this cast is full of kids... They win regularly.

11:08: That littlest Ferrell child is stealing ths spotlight, BY THE WAY.

11:09: Outstanding Drama Series goes to... "Breaking Bad." Once again, not a shock.

11:10: Fin. It's been real watching with you. For me, eh. Award show was relatively bland and there were few surprises, but like the "Breaking Bad" guy said, it is a new "golden age of television," so there's lots of good stuff out there. I'm off to bed. Have a wonderful evening.
