A man accused stalking Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence and her brother Blaine recently had his application for bail denied by a judge. 23-year-old Han Cong Zhao will now spend the duration of his criminal trial in jail. U.S. Magistrate Judge Dave Whalin deemed the alleged stalker a "danger."
The judge explained: "Mr. Zhao has no connections here and apparently not strong connections in Canada. The evidence is strong. He presents a danger."
At the time of his arrest, Zhao's attorney requested a psychological evaluation for his client.
The alleged stalker sent hundreds of text messages and voicemails to Blaine Lawrence in order to eventually contact and then "protect" the Hunger Games star.
In an affidavit written by FBI Special Agent Richard Boswell III, Zhao started contacting Blaine Lawrence on April 4 of this year. Jennifer's brother received numerous early morning phone calls and text messages with different area codes from someone calling himself "Ted" on his work cell phone. Agent Boswell said "Ted" was soon identified as Han Cong Zhao.
"You got me really upset and when I'm upset, let's see what happens," Zhao wrote to Blaine Lawrence on April 18.
Zhao blamed Blaine Lawrence for putting the actress in danger because she was in Boston (filming American Hustle) before the Boston Marathon bombings. The stalker also apparently sent e-mails to Blaine explaining that he was Jennifer's "husband for life." He also sent quotes from the Bible to Blaine.
Donal Meier, Zhao's attorney, argued that his client was being pursued in such a way due to Jennifer's celebrity status.
"Nowhere that I can see is there a separate criteria for celebrities," Meier said. "There is no celebrity rule."
Judge Whalin also clarified that the Canadian stalker was not being treated this way because Jennifer is a celebrity.
"Let's dispel any type of notion of a celebrity exception or rule," Whalin said. "There is none."
Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence has recently gotten back together with her boyfriend Nicholas Hoult! Let's end this on a happy note!
