Lorde may be the Queen Bee of the iTunes singles chart right now, but that doesn't mean all music fans have to like it. Yesterday (Sept. 20), the 16-year-old New Zealander's single "Royals" surpassed Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" as the No. 1 song on iTunes, and it led to Lorde receiving death threats and angry Twitter messages from some of Cyrus' more rabid fans.
"we #1 on US itunes. even if it lasts an hour i feel HAPPY. downside is all these miley fans telling me they're gonna stab my rotting corpse," Lorde tweeted, simultaneously celebrating her musical accomplishment and expressing her anger at Cyrus' fans.
To prove that her point was valid, she then retweeted two of the more upsetting Twitter messages, which encouraged Lorde to kill herself and criticized her looks. "@lordemusic kill yourself you crusty old hag," wrote @wethinkmiley. "@lordemusic your eyes are too far apart," wrote @richieminx.
Cyrus, who sent a comforting tweet to Lorde, however, did not condone the mean-spirited Twitter messages. "@lordemusic why r people so mean??? Ps your music is awesome," Cyrus said.
That didn't necessarily stop @wethinkmiley from attacking Lorde on Twitter. "Borede had nothing better to do when she hit #1 on iTunes for the first time than call out Miley stans?" she wrote. "Celebrate BITCH @lordemusic."
Despite the Twitter threats, Lorde's single "Royals" has been performing exceptionally well for the up-and-coming singer. Besides reaching No. 1 on iTunes and staying there for at least a day (as of press time), she's also peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Lorde's debut album "Pure Heroine" will drop Sept. 30.
Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus' second "Bangerz" single "Wrecking Ball" hit No. 1 on Wednesday (Sept. 18).
