Pitchfork reports:
Some proceeds from the show will go to the Elliott Smith Memorial Fund, which benefits two youth-oriented charities: Portland's Outside In and Free Arts for Abused Children. There's also an IndieGogo fundraiser now running to raise money on behalf of Outside In. The campaign is tied to the tribute event, with rewards including a set list, a concert poster, a live recording of the benefit, and more.
This is one of the bigger Elliott Smith tributes in recent history. The songwriter died in October of 2003, making this the 10-year anniversary of his passing. There are many theories around his death, but it is widely accepted that Smith committed suicide, leaving fans with his impressive music catalog.
Madonna recently covered Elliott Smith's "Between the Bars" in a special performance coinciding with the premiere of her short film secretprojectrevolution, at the Gagosian Gallery in New York City. This marked the start of her Art for Freedom initiative, "an online global initiative to further freedom of expression."
In a statement, she said her goal was to "show by the example of secretprojectrevolution my creative commitment to inspire change in the world through artistic expression. I hope my film and other submissions to Art for Freedom will be a call to action and give people a place to voice their own creative expression to help fight oppression, intolerance and complacency."
