Justin Timberlake released the first installment of his two-part 20/20 Experience only six months ago, which is pretty obvious from what's heard on part dos. Everything that fans of the multi-talented performer expect from him is clear as day in the latest release, but the listener is still left wanting overall. We can be told to "get down" and "move our bodies," but we still want to be excited. Is Timberlake trying too hard, or just being lazy?
On the bright side, Timberlake keeps listeners guessing with part two, considering these tracks jump from Michael Jackson-inspired pop to hip-hop-infused R&B and soul. There are even some classic rock numbers. The 20/20 Experience - 2 of 2 pleases in this aspect, but the variety feels forced at times.
The guest appearances by Jay Z and Drake were rushed, and forgotten by the next track. In fact, Drake's featured track, "Cabaret," is the shortest on the whole album. People get excited for collaborations, but this album is lacking in that matter.
Justin's foray into southern rock could easily become the most humbling song of his career. "Drink You Away" comes right in the middle of this album and right after the heavily R&B "Murder," featuring Jay Z. The order of songs was a rough jolt, to say the least. Timberlake is best suited for singing about dancing, having sex and having a broken heart, but exploring the blues might have been too much for the pop vocalist. A song about drinking whiskey to get over unrequited love allows the listener to forget the other tracks about love, sex, and dancing. It takes us away from the Experience.
Timberlake simply spreads himself too thin on The 20/20 Experience - 2 of 2. Albums are supposed to have rises and falls, but this exemplifies a plateau. Perhaps six months was not enough time between releases.
Stand out tracks include "Amnesia" and "Gimme What I Don't Know (I Want)."
