The American Music Awards is the latest example of why we can't have nice things. Leading the pack in nominations on the online-ballot-decided, populist awards show is none other than walking gimmick/scratchy voiced so-so rapper Macklemore (and his producer/partner-in-crime Ryan Lewis, who I can't knock because the beats and hooks are solid).
The duo got six nominations: Artist of The Year, Favorite Band/Duo/Group- Pop/Rock, Favorite Artist - Hip-Hop/Rap, Single of The Year ("Thrift Shop"), Favorite New Artist and Favorite Album - Rap/Hip-Hop.
Meanwhile, Kendrick, 2 Chainz, Migos, Flatbush Zombies etc got shut out in Hip-Hop's favorite artist category (though K-Dot did get a nod for his good kid, m.A.A.d. city album).
Before I get people rushing to the comments to defend Macklemore tell me about "Same Love", let me say this. That song is great...until Macklemore comes in and continues to be not at all good at rapping in any way, shape or form. The Mary Lambert hook is astounding and deserves recognition and the song addresses a very important topic. Now imagine how much better it would be in the hands of a more capable lyricist.
Every single category has Macklemore facing off with someone who deserves the title more, though he will likely sweep due to the continued success of his novelty single.
A rundown: New Artist should go to the incredible Ariana Grande, Single of the year should go to "Blurred Lines" (though I don't really care so long as long as "Cruise" which is literally the worst pop single I have ever heard doesn't take it). Band should go to 1D. Favorite Rap Artist is a turd sandwich of a category, but I'd give it to Jay on legacy. Album goes to K-Dot.
Or you could just go ahead and give every single award to Prince Royce, the Latin avatar of my soft, pink center.
