Pearl Jam's admittedly disappointing new album Lightning Bolt has given them reason to discuss their unquestionably awesome two-decade-long career. Hurray for the positives!
The band took part in a SiriusXM town hall where they underlined their current album's theme of encroaching mortality and discussed life as a band for 20 some-odd years.
Listen to some snippets below:
"I think we went into it with the idea that we wanted to be brothers in a band," Stone Gossard said about the new album and the band's longevity. "And really part of what we were attracted to, is [that] being in a band is like a commitment you kind of have to make... That's kind of built into our DNA and luckily it's carried us through a lot of times where it's been more difficult."
That led Vedder to chime in with a piece that shows he's still in the headspace he was when creating the new album.
"It's kind of like dying, or getting older," he said. "You don't want to get older but what are the options? And so for us in a way it's like: [Do we] not be in a group? It's like you wanna just keep living and still be in a band." Then he added, joking, "It's life or death."
The full Town Hall airs October 11 at 12 p.m. EST on Pearl Jam Radio (natch).
