In a new interview with Sky News to promote his new album, New, Sir Paul McCartney was asked about the current pop music industry. Miley Cyrus was one of the current artists brought up to the former Beatles legend, specifically her controversial MTV Video Music Awards performance with Robin Thicke during the song of the summer, "Blurred Lines." But Paul gave a pretty great response, saying that the controversy is overblown.
"I don't think it was explicit at all," McCartney said. "You couldn't see anything. I watched it just as an experiment to check, but you look at it and you say 'what's everyone shouting about?' She's a young girl, she's only 20 or something, she's just having a go."
Clearly Miley will be happy to hear such a great defense from the music royalty. The performer went on to explain how he's heard both sides of the argument but still feels that Miley is not being controversial.
He stated: "Someone said to me that the world a lot of those people like Miley live in is noise - it's all noise - and they've got to get above the noise, so they've got to do something. I think it was only mildly shocking. She's dancing with Robin Thicke on the awards. So what. Come on, we've seen worse than that."
Sir Paul also addressed the comparisons between the biggest boy band in the world right now, One Direction, and his former band the Beatles. Clearly there are plenty of arguments in each direction the conversation could go, but McCartney made a pretty apt point.
"When you call someone the new Beatles, it can be the kiss of death, because people expect you to live up to what we did, and we did what we did in a particular period of time that is very different to now," he explained.
Though he is a living legend, Paul's comparison of the two acts seemed to be humble and well thought out.
"It was easier to be a wild success. But I think these bands are great, I like One Direction," he admitted. "They're young beautiful boys and that's the big attraction. But they can sing, they make good records. That's what I can see in common. Girls love them."
McCartney is dishing out some high praise to today's young artists. Do you agree with him?
