Last night the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles housed all the usual star suspects at the biggest awards ceremonies. The only difference, this event wasn't aired. It's been 17 years in the running, and next year may be the first time viewers can see what unfolds on television. Since you (probably) weren't there to see for yourself, The Hollywood Reporter gave an expansive review of the evening. Here are the highlights.
A drop-in by Kanye West who delivered the Hollywood Breakout Director Award to Steve McQueen, of 12 Years a Slave. (Yes, this was the same day as Kim Kardashian's 33rd birthday. West apparently popped the question after flying back.)
Forty-one-year-old Jared Leto received a Hollywood Breakout Performance Award for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, where he packed on 40 pounds to play a transsexual. "I've actually never received an award for anything I've ever done on screen," Leto said.
Jennifer Garner presented McConaughey with the Hollywood Actor Award for his role in the same film.
Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds gave Chris Martin the Hollywood Song Award for "Atlas" on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack. Martin delivered a rare, powerful solo performance to the crowd.
Perhaps not a surprise that Sandra Bullock received a Hollywood Actress Award for Gravity, presented by Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer.
The Hollywood Screenwriter Award went to the writers of the Before series, Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke. Jack Black supported his School of Rock collaborator Linklater and then joked, "I'm just a dude who wants to be in the next installment, Before the Eclipse."
Sounds like a fun crowd post-ceremony. The Hollywood Reporter overheard all the fun at the parties. "You got McConaughey here! You got Jack Black here!" Ethan Hawke said
Dick Clark Productions (under the same larger company as THR) is behind the event. The executive director and founder Carlos de Abreu decides the winners, along with an advisory committee. Nancy O'Dell of Entertainment Tonight hosted the evening.
