Lorde specifically calls out Maybach Music Group in the bridge of her smash hit "Royals," citing it as one of the biggest disconnects in music that isolate the content of pop songs and its audience. So, it's slightly curious that the Maybach boss himself, Rick Ross, would remix the track, but since that's the cool new thing to do, Ross added some new beats to "Royals" and a verse in the middle full of the Boss' signature money-loving rhymes.
Straight from the beginning, it's clear this is a Maybach production. "Funkaster Flex" and "Maybach Music" drop before Lorde's vocals kick in. From there, the song's signature laid back sound shines through. The Rick Ross remix doesn't mess with the song's production value too much, though occasional beat drops are scattered throughout the track. For the most part, it's really just "Royals."
That is, of course, until Ross' verse comes in to play after the first chorus. With his signature, laid back style that actually plays off Lorde's vocals well, Ross then proceeds to throw the entire meaning of the song out the window and rap about all his favorite things, which of course, include money and John Grisham novels.
"New fur carpet now my dirty boots in it / Flowing in my pocket like we're rolling into college... She wanna watch 'Scandal' / I wanna count a handful," he raps, highlighting the everyday excess Lorde criticizes.
Ignoring the lyrics though, the remix ain't half bad.
