NME just named The Smiths 1986 album The Queen Is Dead the greatest album of all time. The third album from Morrissey and his Mopers beat out...well, everybody. But more specifically it topped The Beatles' Revolver (2), David Bowie's Hunky Dory (3), The Strokes' Is This It (4) and The Velvet Underground & Nico (5).
NME journalists from throughout the years were asked to give their top 50 albums, with 50 points goingto a number one selection, 49 to a second-place pick and so on. The results were tabulated and turned into the list of 500 albums that appears in NME.
The choice is made all the more interesting due to the...shall we say, interesting history between the publication and Morrissey. The Smiths' lead vocalist has been accused of being a fascist and a racist by the long-running music mag and Morrissey has leveled charges of falsifying interviews against the writers.
The news comes as NME's issue for this week hits stands (with the not-at-all cheeky title of The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time: the final, definitive, definitely last of its kind, never to be repeated, comprehensive and absolutely accurate word on the best records ever).
