One Direction's Zayn Malik chose fiancee Perrie Edwards for her 'personality' & only had '2 or 3 proper girlfriends' before proposing

One Direction's engaged heartthrob Zayn Malik broke plenty of hearts when he earlier this year proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Little Mix member Perrie Edwards. That doesn't mean his fans aren't still interested in what he looks for in a girl, though. In a new interview, Zayn revealed what his "type" is and why he chose Perrie!

"My real interest in girls started when I was about 12 or 13," Zayn said. "Girls would come up and ask if I wanted to go out with their friend. I had my first real girlfriend at around 15, and I was with her for about nine months. I've only ever had two or three proper girlfriends."

"I wouldn't say I've got a specific type when it comes to girls," the 20-year-old explained in a recent interview. "I've become a lot less shallow as I've got older, and personality is very important to me now."

He added: "Someone can be the best-looking person in the world, but if they're boring there's nothing worse. You have to have something to stimulate you mentally."

So it looks like Zayn was more interested in Perrie's personality when he decided to ask her to marry him. And according to a recent "1DUpdates" Twitter post, Zayn proposed to Perrie while out at a movie with some friends and his mother!

"Zayn proposed to Perrie whilst watching a film with his mum, Perrie's mum and his 2 best friends," the tweet stated.

Meanwhile, the young lovers have to deal with some hectic schedules considering their professions.

"Zayn has reassured Perrie that she's his priority but Perrie's no fool and knows exactly how the industry works," a source recently explained.

The insider added: "A new studio album is likely to be followed by a lengthy bout of global promotion. The last thing Perrie wants to do is come between Zayn and the band, but she's been left wondering when the wedding is going to happen and has told him he must make time for it."'
