Bob Odenkirk Says 'Better Call Saul' Will Not Be 'Breaking Bad 2.0'

News broke recently that Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan and AMC would officially forge ahead with the spinoff series Better Call Saul based on Bob Odenkirk's fan favorite character, Saul Goodman, from the main show. But to clear the air, Odenkirk has revealed that the new show would not be "Breaking Bad 2.0."

Odenkirk told Screen Rant that the show would be part of the Breaking Bad world but would be a different show with a different tone. Here are Odenkirk's comments in full:

"Here's what I told Vince and Peter - Pete Gould is also writing that show -we're gonna make it fresh. It's not gonna be Breaking Bad 2.0 or whatever. It's a different show and it's gonna have a different energy and we're not gonna try to just extend Breaking Bad. That can't be done. That show is great, it's done, it's all wrapped up and delivered, and now we're gonna do something fresh and new with a character that is rich and funny, and everyone's excited about it. And we wanna make sure the audience sees right away that it's not a continuation of Breaking Bad, but rather its own thing that hopefully is gonna be entertaining on its own terms."

Better Call Saul will be a prequel to Breaking Bad, so most (if not all) of the original characters are in the mix to make appearances. Gilligan told The Hollywood Reporter that Bryan Cranston (Walter White) and Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman) have both told him they are interested in making cameo appearances on the show. Saul's one-time private detective and former Gus Fring employee, Mike Ehrmantraut (played by Jonathan Banks), could have an important role in Better Call Saul.
