As anyone who has ever seen her performances, music videos, cover art etc. can attest, Lady Gaga has most definitely dabbled in some recreational drug use. However, the ARTPOP diva is attempting to get sober and opened up about her struggles to be rid of her habits on Z100.
"I have been addicted to it and it's ultimately related to anxiety coping and it's a form of self-medication and I was smoking up to 15-20 marijuana cigarettes a day with no tobacco," she said. "I was living on a totally other psychedelic plane, numbing myself completely, and looking back I do see now that some of it had to do with my hip pain... I didn't know where the pain was coming from so I was just in a lot of pain and very depressed all the time and not really sure why."
That pain stemmed from an injury Mother Monster suffered during her Born This Way Ball tour. The "Applause" singer was eventually forced to cancel the remaining dates of her tour and undergo rehabilitation.
Gaga added that she also uses drugs to cope with the pressures of being one of the most famous people on the planet, but she is trying to stop.
"[I've used] Most heavily over the past seven years," she said. "But, the truth is that it is very hard to be famous. It's wonderful to be famous because I have amazing fans. But it is very, very hard to go out into the world when you are not feeling happy and act like you are because I am a human being too and I break."
Gaga admits that attempting to go sober has made her much happier, though it is a struggle.
"I'm really very fascinated with this transformation inside of me. I'm feeling very happy and confident with the work I've created," she said.
She added that she is optomistic about being clean in the future.
"Can I be brilliant without it? " she said. "I know that I can be and I have to be because I want to live, and I want my fans to want to live."
Gaga's latest album, ARTPOP, is out now.
