On the surface Tears for Fears (the shimmering, slick pop duo who serve as a virtual shorthand for '80s mainstream) and The Hunger Games (a series of young adult novels/movies set in a dystopian future where children are forced to fight to the death), have little in common. But that's where teenage sensation Lorde steps in.
The Kiwi youngster abandons her voice's typical super-produced sheen for a gutteral deadpan on her cover of Fears' "Everybody Wants To Rule The World." The track, which is part of the Hunger Games: Catching Fire replaces the original's synths with bombastic guitars and intense tribal drumming - turning this adult contemporary staple into a war cry, the perfect soundtrack to a future-world coup.
It also gains points for being the first interesting thing Lorde has done that wasn't tearing down another artist without provocation.
Check out the preview below (and wait for the chorus. It gets better, I promise):
Lorde joins Coldplay, Christina Aguilera and the National on the star-studded soundtrack which hits shelves on November 19.
Hunger Games: Catching Fire is out November 22.
