Comedian Mike Birbiglia, well known for his regular appearances on NPR's This American Life, made a more wide-spread name for himself with the film Sleepwalk With Me last year. He then followed up with My Girlfriend's Boyfriend, his one-man show that received much acclaim and is available on Netflix and will be on iTunes Nov. 26.
Now he has a new project that will take him out on the road, which is sure to be just as hilarious and witty, Thank God for Jokes. He'll head out starting on Jan. 15 in Traverse City, Michigan.
"This is honestly the most excited I've been to go on tour my whole career," Birbiglia told Entertainment Weekly. "Well, partly because I can afford gas now and I know that my car will arrive at the venue. (Not even kidding, that's part of it.) But also I have an hour of new material that's not in my book or my new special or my movie or even on This American Life."
He explained to EW that this show is really about his experiences in his hometown.
"It's just all fresh and new and every night that I've workshopped it it's been different," he said. "I've been workshopping it down the street from my apartment at Union Hall in Brooklyn, where we filmed some of Sleepwalk With Me. The show is all about jokes and life and how jokes can get you in trouble in life and how in a lot of ways you're not even allowed to tell jokes at work or really anywhere except with your friends. And so in some ways, being on stage in front of 1,000 people telling jokes is like hanging out with 1,000 friends with the same sense of humor. And that, to me, is a profound feeling. That's really the goal for me is that everyone experiences that feeling at my shows."
Birbiglia is a clever and endearing comedian. He deserves your attention. Take a look at his tour dates and locations to see if he'll be near you next year.
