Box Office Results: 'The Best Man Holiday' A Big Winner With Impressive Opening Weekend, 'Thor: The Dark World' Once Again Leads The Way

It's rare that there are any big surprises when the box office results come out every weekend. Now a days the entertainment industry is very good at forecasting how various movies will do at the box office before the movies even come out. However, once in a while you get a box office surprise, which may be what you could call "The Best Man Holiday." The movie is the first big holiday movie of the season and has garnered quite a bit of press, but I don't think anyone expected it to do as well as it's projected from early box office results. According to Deadline, "The Best Man Holiday" will end up in second place behind superhero blockbuster "Thor: The Dark World."

I don't think anyone expected "The Best Man Holiday" to win at the box office this week, but it's impressive second place finish has to be considered a big victory. What surprises me is just how close the movie came to actually overtaking "Thor." Deadline reports that "Thor," in its second weekend is expected to gross around $38 million at the box office. In an incredibly strong showing in its first weekend, "The Best Man Holiday" is expected to gross around $31 million for the weekend.

Deadline reports that "Last Vegas" and "Free Birds" are in a close race for third at the box office this weekend, while "Bad Grandpa" looks like it will finish in fifth place.

"The Best Man Holiday" which stars Taye Diggs, Terrance Howard, and Nia Long only cost around $17 million to make. I'm sure you can do the math, but I will tell you, the movie is already bringing in an impressive haul. There was a lot of promotion for "The Best Man Holiday" heading into this weekend's opening weekend. What may have also helped was the buzz surrounding Howard's comments about his role in the original "Iron Man." Howard took an alleged jab at "Iron Man" star Robert Downey Jr., which got picked up all over the web. Either way, the movie seems to be a massive success.
