We haven't seen much of Keanu Reeves since The Matrix series came to a close but all of that is about to change. Reeves is making his return in the 3-D film 47 Ronin.

The film is based on a true Japanese story and highlights an actual historical event during the Edo Period known as "Chushingura." The film depicts the chronicles of a lord who was wrongfully put to death and his followers, ronin, who sought revenge.

The film's director, Carl Rinsch, says he hopes his adaptation of this Japanese tale will be a blockbuster.

"These themes of revenge, loyalty, perseverance, were things we knew from the very beginning were universal," said Rinsch. 47 Ronin is Rinsch's directorial feature debut.

Reeves seems excited about the film as well. He recently said:

47 Ronin is a story where people "share this journey to reclaim their land, their honor, their way. It was very special to me to be part of it."

Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada stars as the main supporting character, Kuranosuke Oishi, a leader of the men.

But his upcoming film isn't all Reeves has up his sleeve. The actor, who grew up fascinated by martial arts movies, made his directorial debut this year with the martial arts action movie Man of Tai Chi.

Man of Tai Chi stars Reeves alongside Tiger Chen and Karen Mok. The film is slated to be released on Blu-Ray on Dec. 10.

The film 47 Ronin premiers in Japan on Dec. 6 and opens in U.S. theaters on Dec. 25. Will you be watching? And did you see his previous Man of Tai Chi?
