Vegan beef is just a fun phrase. The latest to jump on the diet-shaming bandwagon growing against electronic artist Grimes (real name: Claire Boucher) is the shoegaze-revival band DIIV.
After Grimes posted a lengthy retort to an anonymous vegan who was incensed over Grimes (who claims to be a vegan) taking a "hiatus" to enjoy some Ben & Jerry's ice cream, DIIV sent out their own angry response via Twitter.
grimes' version of veganism is called "NOT vegan", even if a dairy cow is "treated ethically" doesn't mean u aren't consuming/exploiting her
— DIIV (@DIIV) November 22, 2013
Grimes had pointed out that the cows that produce milk for Ben & Jerry's ice cream are treated ethically and held up to higher standards of care than the average dairy cow.
Several people have rushed to agree with the sentiment in DIIV's tweet, while others have posed the question at the heart of almost all social media-based news stories.
@DIIV why the fuck do you care? Everything she said was right. People would be more willing to try it if vegans weren't such tools about it

What do you think? Should Grimes be able to call herself a vegan? Should DIIV have called her out like this?
