After Tim Burton's 2010 blockbuster hit Alice In Wonderland brought in over $1 billion, it was only a matter of time before Disney would announce a sequel. That's exactly what happened this week. Hitting theaters May 27, 2016, stars Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska will reprise their roles in Alice in Wonderland 2 with the help from director James Bobin.

Depp will reprise his role as the Mad Hatter and Mia will step back into Alice's shoes for this new sequel. News on the other stars like Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter returning for the film have yet to be reported. Director James Bobin is the first new name attached to the movie, as he will be replacing Tim Burton for this sequel.

Deadline reports:

Depp is in final discussions at Disney for the much anticipated Alice In Wonderland sequel with James Bobin (of the recent Muppets reboots) subbing for Tim Burton as director. Johnny's turn as the Mad Hatter in that 3D modern classic, of course, made over $1B worldwide grosses for the studio in 2010.

Earlier this year, Alice in Wonderland 2 was pretty much just an idea from the production company and had the title Into the Looking Glass but these days simply putting the 2 up there will suffice. Expect more information on this project as more updates come in.
