Has Miley Cyrus twerked her way to become the most important newsworthy person of 2013? At least in voter's eyes she has! The "Wrecking Ball" singer is leading Time magazine's reader poll for their 2013 Person of the Year.
As of press time on Wednesday, Nov. 27, Cyrus has 28.8 percent of the vote on Time's poll, beating out more traditional candidates such as Narendra Modi (National Democratic Alliance candidate for prime minister in India), NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden and Pope Francis. Modi, who is second in the poll, has 13.4 percent.
Cyrus isn't the only American celebrity on the list, but figures like Jimmy Fallon, Angelina Jolie and LeBron James all have less than one percent of the vote.
Unfortunately for Miley and her fans, Cyrus probably won't end up as the 2013 Person of the Year. The magazine made it very clear at the top of the voting page that the editors would make the final decision for the magazine's big honor.
Additionally, not all of Cyrus' votes are actually legitimate. According to The Daily Dot, a group of programmers figured out a way to hack the poll and make Cyrus the person of the year, in an attempt to make a mockery of the user-decided poll.
Despite the poll basically being nothing but for fun, Cyrus is enjoying being No. 1. The singer has taken to her official Twitter account to encourage her fans to vote in the Time poll, retweeting messages from her Smilers asking people to go to the poll.
Time will announce the official winner of the Internet contest on Dec. 6. As for their real Person of the Year? That announcement will come on Dec. 11.
