The Philadelphia 76ers are finally putting Allen Iverson to rest. The franchise announced Wednesday (Nov. 27) that the team would be retiring Iverson's No. 3 jersey with the Sixers.

Iverson was named the Most Valuable Player by the NBA in 2001 and led the Sixers to the NBA Finals that same year.

The team will retire Iverson's jersey on March 1 in a ceremony before a home game against Washington.

Iverson will be the eighth 76er to have his jersey retired. Other retired Sixers jerseys include those of Julius Erving, Charles Barkley, Wilt Chamberlain, Maurice Cheeks, Billy Cunningham, Bobby Jones and Hal Greer.

A.I.was the first player selected in the 1996 NBA Draft. He played with the Sixers for 10 seasons. Iverson also wore jerseys for Denver, Detroit and Memphis. He returned to Philadelphia in 2010.

Iverson is a four-time NBA scoring champion and 11-time NBA All-star. He played 10 games for Turkish side Besiktas before throwing in the towel. He officially announced his retirement last month at a ceremony before the 76ers season opener.

Iverson ranks second in 76ers history in minutes played (29,879), points (19,931), steals (1,644) and free throws made (5,122). His average of 27.6 points a game matched Chamberlain for the highest scoring average in franchise history.

From the official press release:

"Iverson is one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history despite his small stature (6'0 and 165 lbs). He led the 76ers to their first Finals appearance since 1983 and played in front of thunderous cheers and sold out crowds. Known as "The Answer," he is one of the greatest finishers in the game. He leaves a lasting legacy forever in the hearts of Philadelphia fans. With boundless talent, he was always exciting to watch and had a flashy style that endeared him to fans all over the world."
