It's been quite the year for animated feature films and television shows. Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks and Universal and more have pulled out all the stops in 2013, releasing innovative new movies that challenge the idea that cartoons are simply just for kids. To help celebrate the achievements in the animated arts, today (Dec. 2), the nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced.
Disney's Frozen, which just reached theaters in November and Pixar's Monsters University lead nominations with 10 apiece, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Not too far behind them are DreamWorks' The Croods and Universal's Despicable Me 2, which both racked up nine nominations. All four are up for the much-coveted Best Animated Feature Award, alongside A Letter to Momo, Ernest & Celestine and The Wind Rises.
Other than Best Feature, Frozen also got nods for Best Character Animation, Best Directing, and Best Song, among many other nominations. It's up against The Croods in all those categories.
Of course, animated films would be nothing without some of the big name stars who voice characters. Kristen Wiig (Despicable Me 2), Steve Carrell (Despicable Me 2), Josh Gad (Frozen) and Billy Crystal (Monsters University) are among some celebrities nominated for their voiceover work.
Meanwhile, on the television side, popular programs such as Adventure Time, The Legend of Korra, Bob's Burgers and Futurama are all up for Best TV/Broadcast Production, separated by categories for children's audience and general audience.
The 2014 Annie Awards will take place on Feb. 1 at UCLA's Royce Hall.
