Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) is married to the President of the United States, Fitzgerald Grant, on the ABC smash hit Scandal. But the relationship is, shall we say, less than perfect. Between Fitz's cheating on Mellie with Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and Mellie's numerous manipulations, the marriage is rocky at best. And apparently, it's about to get more complicated.
The "Ask Ausiello" column at TVLine reveals that Mellie will be getting a new gentleman in her life who will serve as a love interest for the First Lady:
"Question: On Scandal, don't you think Jake would be a good match for Mellie? -Sara
I'm not feeling it. Besides, if my hunch is correct (tee-hee, when isn't it?!), the new fortysomething character the show is currently casting - a handsome, charismatic fella named Andrew - will be keeping company with Bellamy Young's love-starved FLOTUS. And, if this is who they end up hiring, we deserve some kind of trophy or medal. Or something."
The link in the above quote leads to a previous TVLine article in September in which the site predicted that Scandal would hire Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a new love interest for Mellie. If that turns out to be true, it would actually be a great hire because Morgan would be perfect for the part.
But for everything that has gone between Mellie and Fitz on the show, the one thing Mellie has never done is cheat. She's manipulated, lied and been an icy cold shrew at times, but she has always been faithful to her husband. It should be interesting to see what (or who) causes that to change.
By the way, E! Online reports that the new character will appear in Episode 11.
